Eponym Adoption

The term Marginal artery of Drummond was formally adopted to recognize Drummond’s contribution to defining the vessel and clarifying its clinical significance.[1,2

Eponym:

The marginal artery is eponymously known as the Marginal artery of Drummond, named after Sir David Drummond (1852–1932). Drummond was born in Dublin, Ireland, and studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin in 1874.[1]

He practiced primarily at the Royal Infirmary, where he focused largely on neurological disorders and complications of systemic disease. Although most widely recognized for his contributions to neurology, Drummond provided a detailed anatomical description of the marginal arterial arcade and highlighted its potential implications in surgical practice.[1]

Scientific Contributions:

Sir David Drummond’s contribution to anatomy centered on clarifying the continuity and functional relevance of the marginal arterial arcade. While earlier anatomists had observed mesenteric arterial interconnections, Drummond identified the longitudinal vessel as a consistent anastomotic channel along the colon.[2By emphasizing its role in maintaining colonic perfusion, he contributed to the developing understanding of collateral circulation in colorectal surgery.[2] Subsequent anatomical and radiologic investigations further defined variations in the marginal artery and its relationship to watershed regions, particularly at the splenic flexure, reinforcing the clinical relevance initially described by Drummond.[2]
