Structure:
The laryngeal prominence is a midline projection on the anterior aspect of the neck formed by the fusion of the right and left laminae of the thyroid cartilage at an acute angle.[1] The thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage of the larynx and constitutes a major structural component of the anterior laryngeal framework.[1]
Although the laryngeal prominence is present in individuals of all sexes, the angle between the laminae of the thyroid cartilage is typically more acute following puberty in males, making the prominence more palpable and often visibly apparent.[1] The laryngeal prominence, together with the larynx as a whole, elevates during swallowing as part of normal protective airway mechanisms.[1]
Function:
Enlargement of the laryngeal prominence during puberty is considered a secondary sex characteristic and is associated with growth of the larynx.[2]
While the prominence itself does not directly alter vocal pitch, its development correlates with laryngeal enlargement and lengthening of the vocal folds, which contribute to the characteristic lowering of voice pitch during male puberty.[2,3]
The thyroid cartilage, of which the laryngeal prominence is a defining feature, functions as a protective shield for the anterior portion of the larynx, safeguarding the vocal folds and other internal laryngeal structures.[3]
Because of its surface visibility and consistent anatomical position, the laryngeal prominence serves as an important landmark in clinical practice, particularly in emergency and surgical procedures. It aids in identifying the cricothyroid membrane for cricothyrotomy or cricothyroidotomy.[2]
