Eponym:

The ulnar canal is eponymously known as Guyon’s canal, named after Jean Casimir Félix Guyon (1831–1920), a French surgeon and urologist.[3]

Guyon was born on the island of Réunion and completed his medical education in Paris, earning his doctorate in 1858.[3] He later became a professor of surgical pathology and genitourinary surgery at the University of Paris and was elected to the Académie de Médecine in 1878.[3] Although best known for his contributions to urology, Guyon’s anatomical observations at the wrist led to the identification of the canal that now bears his name.[4]

Scientific Contributions:

Guyon’s discovery of the ulnar canal arose from clinical observation. While applying pressure to the hypothenar region of the palm, he noted small lobulated structures (“petits lobules”) and subsequently investigated their anatomical basis through dissection.[4] This work led to the first description of the ulnar tunnel and its neurovascular contents.[4

Later anatomical and clinical studies expanded upon Guyon’s original findings, refining understanding of canal subdivisions and their relevance to ulnar nerve compression syndromes.[1,4]
